Introduction
Government College (Autonomous), Rajahmundry, proudly celebrated the 150 Years of the Vandemataram Movement with great nationalistic fervour and respect for India’s rich freedom struggle. The event was jointly coordinated by the NCC Unit and the college administration to inspire students with the legacy of patriotic movements associated with the institution.
Programme Highlights
The celebration began with the grand mass singing of “Vandemataram”, in which the Principal, faculty members, NCC cadets, and students participated with patriotic enthusiasm. The collective rendition created an atmosphere filled with devotion towards the nation and reverence for the sacrifices of freedom fighters.
Principal’s Address
The Principal delivered an insightful and inspiring address on the historical background of the Vandemataram Movement. He highlighted:
• The significance of “Vandemataram,” composed by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, in uniting the nation during the freedom struggle.
• The historical link between the Vandemataram Movement and Government Arts College, Rajahmundry.
• The powerful contributions of Gadicherla Harisarvottama Rao, an eminent alumnus and freedom fighter, who bravely championed the right to sing “Vandemataram” despite British suppression.
• The historic incident involving Principal Hunter, the then British Principal of the college, whose restrictions on nationalist expressions ignited even greater patriotism among students.
• The influence of the Lal–Bal–Pal trio, who’s stirring speeches inspired students of this college to participate actively in the nationalist movement.
The Principal urged students to uphold the country’s unity, cherish its freedom, and always be prepared to serve the nation with integrity and dedication.
